  1. Did you have expectations before moving abroad and did your new home live upto your expectations?

I had been there before, so I was very aware of what I was getting myself into. There were a few things I hadn’t put into perspective before moving there.. But other than that yes, it lived up to my expectations.

Mistakes we make as immigrants

  1. How was your first year?

It was a bit of a rocky start, settling in, furnishing the house and just getting the lay of the land and all this with a relatively newborn. I thank God for my in-laws because they made the transition quite seamless for us. I immediately joined a language course so it did begin to get easier as I began to be able to understand conversations and communicate more.

  1. What do you miss about home?

I miss the food. I miss doing my hair in a salon. I miss hanging out with my friends and family even though I have made great new friends it was still hard to leave my old friends behind, thank God for the internet.

I took poultry to a Swedish classroom!

  1. What do you wish your friends and relatives knew about living abroad that they don’t?

It’s not easy, life can be expensive. Language can be a barrier if you are in a non-English speaking Country like I am. Try and make an effort to learn the language beforehand, it will make your transition much easier. Take advantage of the opportunities that exist to further your education… EU has a lot of vocational training opportunities that one can take advantage of.

  1. One thing you wish you wish you knew before the big move.

To carry loads and loads of local hair products, especially leave in conditioner. I wish I had started learning the language as soon as we got married.
